Raspberry Pi Global Shutter Camera - 1.6MP Sony IMX296 for Fast Motion

Capture fast-moving objects without motion blur with the Official Raspberry Pi Global Shutter Camera. Featuring the Sony IMX296 global shutter sensor with 1.58 megapixels, this specialized camera eliminates rolling shutter artifacts that plague traditional cameras when capturing rapid motion. Perfect for machine vision, industrial automation, high-speed photography, and robotics applications where distortion-free images are critical.

No More Jello Effect - True Global Shutter

Unlike rolling shutter cameras that capture images line-by-line creating distortion with fast motion, the global shutter sensor captures the entire frame simultaneously. This eliminates the "jello effect," skew, and wobble artifacts - essential for machine vision AI inference, barcode scanning, and high-speed photography.

What You Need (Sold Separately)

Required - NOT Included

  • Raspberry Pi Board - Any model with CSI connector (Pi 5, 4B, 3B+, Zero 2 W, etc.)
  • C or CS Mount Lens - Camera does NOT include lens
  • Power Supply - Appropriate for your Raspberry Pi model
  • MicroSD Card - With Raspberry Pi OS installed
  • Raspberry Pi Zero Camera Cable - If using with Pi Zero (standard cable incompatible)

Important Information

LENS NOT INCLUDED

This camera does NOT include a lens.

You must purchase a separate C-mount or CS-mount lens. The camera uses the same lens mount as the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera. Lens choice depends on your application - wide angle for general vision, telephoto for distant objects, or macro for close-up work.

Raspberry Pi Zero Compatibility

Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero W, and Zero 2 W require a special camera cable with smaller connector on the Pi end. The standard 150mm cable included with this camera will NOT fit Raspberry Pi Zero models. Purchase a Raspberry Pi Zero camera cable separately.

IR Cut Filter Removal

The camera includes an integrated IR cut filter. This can be permanently removed if you need IR sensitivity (for night vision or infrared applications). Warning: Removal is irreversible - once removed, you cannot re-install the filter.

Native Raspberry Pi Support

Works with latest Raspberry Pi OS out of the box using libcamera and Picamera2. No special drivers needed. The camera is fully supported by rpicam-apps for still and video capture.

Resolution Optimized for Machine Vision

The 1.58MP resolution may seem low compared to consumer cameras, but it's intentionally optimized for machine vision:

  • Real-Time Processing - Lower resolution means faster AI inference
  • Reduced Bandwidth - Easier to transmit and process in embedded systems
  • Native Scale - With proper lens, capture at native model input size
  • Focused Performance - Sensor resources dedicated to speed, not megapixels
  • Industrial Standard - Typical resolution for machine vision applications

Recommended Lenses

For Different Applications:

  • Wide Angle (4-6mm) - General machine vision, room monitoring, large field of view
  • Standard (8-12mm) - General purpose, moderate field of view, versatile
  • Telephoto (16-25mm) - Distant objects, narrow field of view, magnification
  • Macro - Close-up inspection, small parts, microscopy applications

Note: Lenses sold separately. Check our related products for compatible C/CS mount lenses.

Software Examples

Using libcamera (Raspberry Pi OS):

# Take a still image
libcamera-still -o test.jpg

# Record video
libcamera-vid -t 10000 -o test.h264

# Preview with short exposure (high-speed)
libcamera-hello --shutter 30

Using Picamera2 (Python):

from picamera2 import Picamera2

picam2 = Picamera2()
config = picam2.create_still_configuration()
picam2.configure(config)
picam2.start()

# Capture image
picam2.capture_file("test.jpg")

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this camera include a lens?
A: No. You must purchase a separate C-mount or CS-mount lens. The camera works with the same lenses as the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera.

Q: What's the difference between global and rolling shutter?
A: Global shutter captures the entire frame simultaneously, eliminating motion blur and distortion. Rolling shutter captures line-by-line, causing "jello effect" with fast motion.

Q: Why is the resolution only 1.58MP?
A: This is intentional for machine vision. Lower resolution allows real-time processing, faster frame rates, and is standard for industrial applications where speed matters more than megapixels.

Q: Will this work with Raspberry Pi Zero?
A: Yes, but you need a special Raspberry Pi Zero camera cable (sold separately). The standard cable included won't fit the smaller Zero connector.

Q: Can I remove the IR cut filter?
A: Yes, but removal is permanent and irreversible. Only remove if you specifically need IR sensitivity.

Q: What frame rate can this camera achieve?
A: Up to 60 FPS depending on your Raspberry Pi model, resolution settings, and image processing pipeline.

Q: Does it work with libcamera?
A: Yes! Fully supported by libcamera, Picamera2, and rpicam-apps on Raspberry Pi OS. No special drivers needed.

Q: What's the shortest exposure time?
A: As low as 30 microseconds with adequate lighting - perfect for freezing very fast motion.
